St. Angela Merici Parish Organizations
CYO
An important part of any family life is putting aside life’s daily chores and making time to socialize and enjoy having some good clean fun. And that’s just what St. Angela’s CYO offers to the youth of the parish. It’s open to high school students in grades 8-12 . Monthly meetings are generally held on the second Sunday of the month from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM in the gym. We pray, play and eat together! We have coed volleyball in the fall and the spring, boys and girls basketball, and summer coed cabbage ball teams. We participate in World Youth Day and Abbey Youth Fest annually. Trips to Adventure Quest, The Haunted Corn Maze and Leo's Iceland are some of our off-campus social activities. We also strive to serve our parish and our community in building Christ's kingdom through various service projects. To join or serve as an adult volunteer, please call 835-8491.
Knights of Columbus
There is no lay organization in the Catholic Church better suited to promote
and enhance family life, support vocations to the priesthood and religious
life, to show solidarity with our bishops and priests, and to advance
the new evangelization than the Knights of Columbus. Bishop Caillouet
Council Number 9007 is an integral part of St. Angela Parish. Our council
is one of 12,000 Knights of Columbus councils that lead the way by helping
to integrate more completely the life of the family and the laity within
the life of the parish.
The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic, family, fraternal and service
organization. The future of the Church and the future of the Knights of
Columbus are inseparably linked. If the Church is going to thrive in today’s
society, far more action of an ecumenical nature is needed. The prime
responsibility of the Knights of Columbus is to encourage and promote
that action.
The St. Angela Merici Religious Education Library, located in the
Administration Building, is home to Bishop Caillouet Council Number
9007. Monthly meetings are held on the third Thursday. The meetings include
a meal at 7:00 PM, followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:30.
The Knights of Columbus fraternal meeting immediately follows the Rosary.
Men who join the Knights do so for many reasons. Through membership,
Council 9007 can help our pastor and our parish in real and concrete ways.
There are many Catholic men in St. Angela Merici Parish who are out there
waiting to join the Knights of Columbus, if only they were asked. This
is your invitation. Please contact Justin Douglass, Jr., Grand
Knight, at 837-4385 and experience a grassroots involvement in the
Church through the Knights
of Columbus.
Prayer Group
Every Wednesday morning from 9:30-11:30 in the Saint Angela Merici annex,
there is something powerful taking place. It’s a dedicated group
of people gathering in prayer, reflection, and song, still going strong
after nearly thirty years. Although some have come and gone, many of this
closely knit prayer group have been praying together and helping each
other through the trials and tribulations of life. What began as 5 women
has grown into a group of approximately 25. They’ve seen each other
through births, deaths, and the burdens of life. They’ve prayed
in peaceful times and during war times. The group enjoys getting together
and witnessing the power of prayer at work.
The two-hour prayer meeting includes rosary recitation, the prayer of
St. Michael, general and personal intentions, praying for the divine mercy
of God, and a sharing and singing period. Mass is celebrated the second
Wednesday of the month, with a visiting priest as celebrant. Coffee is
served at each meeting and the group plans various activities throughout
the year, such as a Christmas luncheon and Lenten and Advent reflections
to name a few. All are invited to attend the prayer meetings; they are
casual. Bring your Bible and any other inspiring words and/or materials
you might want to share with the group.
Senior Citizens
The Senior Citizens group was established in 1979 and has a wide variety
of goals and activities for its members. The spiritual, cultural, and
social enrichment of each member, as well as support of parish activities
and programs, are important goals of this organization. Examples of activities
include: May Crowning, Day of Recollection, Senior Citizen Mass, participation
in the annual Parish fair, occasional in-town and out-of-town entertainment
trips, and special luncheons held away from the Parish. During the year,
this group collects non-perishable food items for the poor. They also
help the school and other organizations by collecting Community Coffee
bags, Campbell Soup labels, Betty Crocker education coupons, eye- and
sunglasses, and hearing aids. In addition to their regular meetings and
activities, they also participate in Archdiocesan Senior Citizen functions,
such as the Archdiocesan Senior Citizens Mass and the Archdiocesan Awards
Luncheon.
Meetings are held in the gym on the first Thursday of the month from
August through May, at noon. A short business session, socializing,
bingo, and refreshments are part of each meeting, which usually ends at
about 3:00 PM. Birthdays are recognized and attendance prizes and other
gifts are given at each meeting. Special events include occasional guest
speakers and entertainment programs in observance of special holidays.
Best of all is the opportunity to get together with friends, both old
and new. Membership is open to anyone who has attained the age of fifty-five
years. Annual dues of $10.00 are collected to support the activities of
this group. If anyone needs further information or has any questions,
please call the rectory at 835-0324.
SALA
The St. Angela Ladies Auxiliary is an organization made up of ladies from
St. Angela Merici Parish who work to promote the spiritual learning and
growth of their members. They also work with and promote various parish,
church, and school activities. This group meets the first Tuesday of each
month, from September through May, in the gym at 7:30 PM. During these
meetings, either a guest speaker discusses various topics or an interesting
activity is done. Of course, every meeting includes socializing and refreshments.
Each month has a different “theme.” Cake and storytelling,
a Christmas carol sing-a-long, pot-luck supper, and a collectibles “show
and tell,” are a few of the ideas shared by this creative group
of women.
In addition to the monthly meetings, other special events are held. The
ladies attended an art workshop as guests of the New Orleans Museum of
Art. They have had garage sales in the gym. During Advent, a morning of
prayer is conducted with a guest speaker. The Liturgy Committee members
lead the rosary daily before the 8:30 AM Mass. Every Saturday morning
after Mass a Church Housekeeping Committee team maintains the pews, altar
and linens and keeps the church beautifully decorated with floral arrangements.
The Ways and Means help support the parish fair, Scripture Safari, the
school library, the annual SALA Scholarship, as well as other worthy parish
endeavors. This is just a small example of what one can expect as a member
of this organization. The ladies of SALA work and pray for the benefit
of St. Angela Parish and the Christian family, and invite all ladies of
St. Angela Merici Parish to join them. If anyone needs further information
or has any questions, please call the rectory.
SAMA
Please accept our invitation to join us in fun, food and fraternity as
members of the St. Angela Men’s Association. This unique organization
of guys just like you, young and old, was formed to promote unity and
fellowship within our parish, as well as to have a monthly social gathering
for the exchange of ideas and consideration of projects that may improve
our way of life and take care of the needs of our parish. Of course, our
monthly meals with beer and soft drinks do not deter our growth.
For those of you who are new to us or who just haven’t gotten around
to checking us out, please come to our next meeting and join the other
dads, grandfathers, and single men in our parish and school family, most
of whom you already know. We always have a great meal as well as a local
sports, political, or community speaker at each meeting (third Tuesday
of every month). Our crawfish boil and steak night alone are worth the
dues.
S.A.M.A. helps sponsor several parish and school functions throughout
the year, such as fish fries, the fall fair, and various sports activities.
We are instrumental in helping with man power when help is needed in parish
activities. We even sponsor the annual Christmas caroling. If you are
looking for an opportunity to get to know a bunch of good people, and
in the process get involved in helping the parish, please join and become
a member of a growing fraternity we call S.A.M.A. If you have any questions,
feel free to contact us through the rectory at 835-0324.
The Liturgy Committee
This group coordinates seasonal planning for parish liturgies, especially
the seasons of Advent and Christmas, Lent and Easter. They seek to plan
and coordinate special parish liturgies such as the Fourth of July, Labor
Day, Thanksgiving Day and our parish Feast Day. The Liturgy Committee
meets quarterly. This ministry is coordinated by Msgr. Ken Hedrick.
Vocation Cross
Each Sunday at 11:00 AM Mass, the Vocation Cross is taken home by a parishioner
or parish family. A commitment is made to pray daily during the week for
vocations, seminarians and religious life to grow and prosper. The Cross
is then returned the following Sunday and given to a new parish family.
Everyone in the parish is invited to participate. Please consider this
simple and much needed commitment.
Scripture Study and Sharing
Every Tuesday morning from 9:15 AM till 11:00 AM, the Scripture Study
group meets in the Annex. Old and New Testament passages are read while
commentaries and background studies are given. The group, made up of men
and women, study what they are interested in, as well as readings from
the current Mass cycle. Meetings are held from the middle of September
through the end of November and resume from the middle of January through
the end of April. Please join us for coffee and a deeper understanding
of the sacred writings of the Bible.
St. Vincent de Paul Society
This group takes care of the needs of the poor of St. Angela Merici Parish.
At Thanksgiving, groceries, turkeys, chickens, hams, and gift certificates
are distributed to the needy both in and out of our church parish. At
other times during the year, parishioners who are in need may receive
food and medicine and a referral to the Ozanam Inn for clothing, furnishings,
etc. If you have time on your hands and would like to become involved
you may call the rectory at 835-0324. Thank you for continuing to contribute
food to the food bins located in church.
